Valerie Achauer

I am a graduate of Bethel University in Minneapolis, MN and currently work as a registered nurse at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor where I grew up. I have always loved sports, but I did not begin running until my freshman year in college. I ran on the cross country and indoor track team for one year and I have been running ever since finding fun 5K’s to do. I really enjoy working with youth and feel that developing a healthy body image and self esteem is critical for girls of all ages. I look forward to coaching for Girls on the Run!

Masha Alaie

I am a first year college student at the University of Michigan. I am a pre-med student planning to major in Neuroscience. I love playing sports, especially soccer and volley ball. Over the past 5 years I have found a new passion – which is learning new languages. I can now speak Spanish pretty well and I hope to study abroad in Spain sometime in the near future.

Stephanie Allen

My name is Stephanie and I have been married to my husband, Troy, for 10 years and we have two wonderful children. Alexis, age 8 and Jake, age 4. I have been a full time Real Estate Consultant for 16 years. I am very active in both of my children’s schools and I have over 8 years of involvement with the Big Brother Big Sister Program which I truly enjoyed and feel as if I had a positive impact on both my “little sisters”. I helped teach them the importance of self respect and self esteem and the importance of family and friendship. I am interested in becoming involved in Girls on the Run because what it stands for and I would love to help in any love of this incredible organization.

Angela Anderson

Since then I’ve run many 5K’s one 10K (so far) and one half marathon with Team In Training in 2007.

Melissa Beck

I am a mother of two wonderful children who keep me very busy. Recently, the child care center I was employed at for the past twelve years was closed. I am currently a stay at home mom looking to further my education. Working with children is something I have always had an interest in. Coaching is new to me, however, I am up for the challenge!

Susan Bednarski

My name is Suzi and I am excited about volunteering with Girls on the Run. I have 4 daughters, ages 12, 10, 8, and 6, as well as a son 1 ½ years old. I am well aware of the need for a program such as this that can instill self-esteem and healthy body image while encouraging exercise. I have been running for 9 months myself and have completed my first marathon in Detroit last October. I have run a couple 5K races as well as a half marathon. I am looking forward to sharing my love of running with the girls. I have discovered that it is something personal almost anyone can do. This will be such a positive experience for both the girls as well as myself.

Lindsay Brentin

As a sophomore at the University of Michigan, I spend much of my time in the library surrounded by biology and anthropology books. When I do get outside, though, I enjoy spending time in the kitchen cooking all sorts of foods and of course, running. I played on the women’s ultimate team at the University of Michigan and have raced distances up to a half marathon. Currently, I am training for my first Olympic distance triathalon and hope to complete a full marathon in the next year.

Miriam Brewer

All of my life I always hated running because I always looked at it as a competition with whoever I was running with. However, when I got into college I began running at my own pace (although other people were running faster than me). I slowly worked my way to running a 5K. It was the first 5KI finished without stopping. I saw how rewarding it is to prove yourself wrong. Being a senior now in Kinesiology at U of M, I have found that activities that you compete against yourself are the ones that make you happiest and bring the greatest sense of confidence, such as running and yoga. I hope that I can help young girls realize this sooner so they can take advantage of what they really love to do for years to come.

Lisa Brower

Lisa has been an educator for fifteen years, teaching 4th grade. Girls on the Run is an amazing, beneficial program that is much needed in our society. She has coached before and felt the girls learned so much about themselves and that it is okay to be yourself. The girls also learned how to treat each other much better and how to reach out to those in need.

Lisa Cesarini

I am originally from Philadelphia but have been living in Ann Arbor for the past 9 years with my husband David and three children (Riley, Kasey and Sean). I also have two golden retrievers, Marley and Zoey. I began running 12 years ago and ran my first marathon last year when I turned 40!

In addition to being a stay at home mom, she is also a Certified Spinning Instructor and works at Joust Strength and fitness in Ann Arbor. Since then she completed 3 more half marathons, one 10 mile run through Hell, Michigan, two 10 Ks and several 5Ks. She also has four triathlons under her belt. April has enjoyed running most of her adult life, and has especially enjoyed when she can share it with others. When individuals come together, April feels we discover a sense of motivation, support, and encouragement that ultimately empowers us to reach our own goals. She has long since enjoyed working and volunteering with the children and families in my community, and is honored to share in the experience of Girls on the Run.

Lisa Cornack

I have been an educator of young children for 16 years. About 10 years ago, I decided to set a better example for my pre-teen daughter….I lost 50 pounds and began walking and then running! I have completed six half marathons and numerous 5 and 10K’s. I don’t know what I’d do without my runs!

Susan Dooley

In elementary school, Susan always felt like she was last to be picked for the kickball team. From an early age on, she told herself, “Susan, you’re not an athlete,” and that self-fulfilling prophecy carried out for many years. Fortunately, later in life she decided to shift her thinking and gave the sport of running a try. On July 5th, 2002 she ran her first mile- what a feeling of accomplishment! On December 7th, 2002- just 8 short months later- she completed her first marathon, 26.2 miles, at the age of 34. After 30 years of not believing in herself, she learned she COULD do it! This accomplishment gave her such courage and strength- not only physically but mentally- at it changed her life. She is committed to helping young women develop a strong inner belief in their selves, habits of healthy living, and self-confidence to take on the challenges of the world!

Suzanne Grace

I didn’t have a good childhood experience or solid role models within my family. I didn’t have anyone to encourage me and help me build my self esteem. Therefore, I never had confidence in myself and always thought I would not go far in my life – I settled for less than my best. At 24, I finally realized that God has a better plan for me. I started challenging myself to move out of my comfort zone and I became outgoing and confident. I am a jewelry consultant (training and leading others), a Girl Scout Leader, Sunday school teacher, AWANA T&T Girls Leader and mother of 2 daughters! I always try my best to give children the encouragement I never had growing up. I hope to be an important difference in children’s lives!

Virginia Graham

Virginia is a senior at the University of Michigan hoping to graduate in December of 2009 with a degree in history. She grew up in Buffalo, NY and upon discovering her love for horses at the age of six, also discovered where so much of her adolescent growth would take place. Horseback riding and the manual labor she performed in the stables gave her an appreciation for physical activity and brought her a sense of confidence, as she learned her capabilities surpasses what she thought was possible. Upon entering college, she was unable to continue riding but has since filled that void with other activities including running. Though nothing can replace horses, running has given her the same physical gratification and lifts her spirits on even the most stressful of days!

This allows me to stay home with our girls. I enjoy working out and staying fit. I also enjoy cooking and trying new and healthy recipes.

Karen Sjogren

As a mother of two young girls, I place a lot of value in teaching girls to find their inner strengths and to believe in themselves. As an involved mother in our community, I strive everyday to be a positive role model. With three children, two dogs and a cat, my husband and I enjoy a full and busy life in our small town of Chelsea.

In 2007, I ran the Detroit Marathon and in 2008 ran the half marathon in Detroit.

Angela VanGordon

I am a mom to 3 girls and believe that Girls on the Run is one of the best programs out there! It is a great opportunity to encourage exercise and healthy eating habits. I love the fact that GOTR not only teaches the girls healthy habits, but it also educates the girls on what changes they will begin seeing….changes in their bodies as well as social changes. I could not ask for more from GOTR.

I look forward to coaching this spring and hopefully you will come to love running as much as I do.

Mary Waldron

I have always loved the outdoors and recognized that to thoroughly enjoy it, it helps to be in decent shape! I’ve been a runner/speed walker on and off since high school – a long time, 35 years in fact – whew! I have always found it a challenge and a way to push myself and feel good about the results. Though I’ve lapsed in physical fitness throughout my life I’ve always had the ability to get back in shape. I believe it’s partly because I started at a young age. My formal education is in Fine Arts and Elementary Education. I am a costumer for a youth ballet company and I love encouraging girls to be their best!

Megan Waters

As a native of the Upper Peninsula, I am a sophomore at the University of Michigan. I am concentrating in Psychology, Women's Studies, and Pre-Nursing; I hope to go on to become a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. Being active has always been an important part of my life; I played sports and ran track in high school. My dad, a marathon runner, and my mom, a triathlete, have always been healthy role models and cheerleaders for me. Now, my favorite running buddy is my dog, Daisy. I am passionate about health and am so excited to be a part of GOTR to promote healthy living and strength in young girls.

Debra White

I am wife to Doug of 25 years. I am a home school mother of six sons and one daughter. I received education through Eastern Michigan University and the University of Madonna as well as serving as a Direct Entry Midwife since 1995. Bridget and I are looking forward to our first year with GOTR.

Grace Wu

Grace is joining us for her third year of coaching Girls on the Run. She has been a runner for 5 years. Running has helped her stay emotionally, mentally, and physically healthy. She feels everyone has a reason to run. Some do it to stay fit, others do it for the pleasure of feeling the wind in their hair, or the sense of achievement they feel when they cross the finish line. Whatever your reason is, Grace is here to share the experience with you! She loves working with young girls and would like to show them ways of living a healthy life. In her spare time, Grace likes to read, watch movies and play with my beagle, Helen. She works for the University of Michigan as the Center Administrator for the Manufacturing Research Center in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
