The NEW 2017 5k route (revised 5/16/17 due to construction on Baxter Road) begins on Hubbard Road, just north of the entrance to our Team Meet Up Area (Lot NC53), and runs along the tree-lined Hubbard Road to a big downhill on Baits Drive, turning around before reaching the U-M Music School. It then heads across Duffield, then turns right to go down Murfin, to Bonisteel. Turning left on Bonisteel, participants go out and back along the boulevard, running on the south lanes before turning back to run west on the north lanes, returning to Murfin. As the go up the hill on Murfin, participants will receive cheers from the participants running down in the southbound lane. One last turn right onto Hayward, another nicely tree-lined street to finish on Hayward, just before the intersection with Hubbard. The post-event refreshment tent, Team Meet-Up Area and Celebration Expo are all located in Lot NC53 at this intersection. All roads on the course will be closed to vehicle traffic from 8:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m., monitored and enforced by University of Michigan Public Safety. It is a spectator-friendly course, with sidewalks along Hayward, Hubbard and Murfin for your viewing ease.
If it is at all possible (even in the rain or cold!) we will continue to have the event. If the weather is too severe (tornado warning or active lightning in the area) and it is not safe for participants to run, the event cancellation will be announced at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 21st. The announcement will be on our website, facebook page, twitter feed, and distributed through our emergency text system. Participants and parents can opt in for this text alert when registering for the 5k or the program (for their Girls on the Run girl.) In the event of a cancellation, we are unable to reschedule the 5k. Registration fees are non-refundable.
The safety of our girls, all participants and spectators at the Girls on the Run 5k Event is our first priority. We have a thorough safety plan for the event. Public safety officers from University of Michigan's Department of Public Safety will be on the course to direct traffic and maintain road closures. The course will be completely closed to traffic, starting at 8:45 a.m. and until our WonderGirl team crosses the finish with the last participants (estimated time of 10:45 a.m.) Girls on the Run volunteer course marshals will be along the entire route. Huron Valley Ambulance will be on site to provide medical treatment or transportation in case of a medical emergency.
All parking is free in the marked lots on the map. Gold, 24-hour Blue and Red Residential marked parking spots are restricted on event day. There are over 3,600 available spots in the parking lots marked on the event parking map. These parking lots are all within 3/4 of a mile of the team meet-up area, so please give yourself additional time to find a parking space and walk to the event. The interactive Google map of the event area includes information for each parking lot, including the number of spaces, the distance to the team meet-up area, and if it is on the route, when the road will be reopened for access to exit the parking lot.
If you need to be somewhere soon after the 5k Event that morning, we recommend that you park in the NCRC or Glazier Way parking lots. These areas are not affected by the road closures for the 5k. Roads on the 5k route will be closed from 8:45 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. for the safety of our participants.
