We really appreciate you taking the initiative to learn more about the program and offer your assistance. Here is some information to help you get acquainted with the volunteer opportunities with GOTRSEMI.
General Information
- The eight week program run two times a year:
- Fall (September to November)
- Spring (March to May)
- The program meets two times a week after school for 90 minutes.
- Coaches are expected to attend every session.
- There will be at least one coach and an assistant coach at each site.
- GOTRSEMI performs a background check on all coaches and assistant coaches.
Requirements for Volunteers:
- Genuine interest in leading a healthy life.
- Commitment to the mission of GOTR.
- Reliable, honest and positive outlook on life.
- Interest in the issues facing young women today.
- Desire to get involved in a new nonprofit organization and help create public awareness.
VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTIONS
Head Coach:
Responsibilities and Volunteer Time Commitment
- Attend Coaches Training (6 hour training session)
- Become CPR and First Aid certified (3 hours)
- Attend 1 mandatory coach’s meeting during the session (1.5 hours total)
- Prepare for and supervise (16) ninety- minute lessons in a manner consistent with the GOTR of Southeastern Michigan philosophy and curricula; this includes attending practices two afternoons per week for the duration of the program (approximately 80 hours total including being present 15 minutes before and after practice)
- Serve as a role model for the girls and encourage the girls at all times
- Wait at the school following all practices until all girls have been picked up
- Plan and coordinate the end of season celebration for the team
- Distribute the program pre and post-test as directed
- Lead the girls in the coordination of a community service project
- Participate with the girls in the end of seasons 5K run/walk Celebration Event
- Provide direction to assistant couches and parent volunteers to ensure they are offering encouragement, participation in games and work-outs, and being cheerleaders for the team
Assistant Coach:
The Assistant Coach is a volunteer position that assists the Head Coach(s) at a Girls on the Run program site. The position entails approximately 1.5-3 hours per week for 8 weeks. Assistant Coaches can choose to attend both program sessions per week OR commit to only one day a week. We ask each Assistant Coach to determine which schedule works best for them and to maintain that schedule throughout the program for consistency on behalf of the girls. While the Assistant Coach is not responsible for facilitation the Girls on the Run curriculum, they are there to support the Head Coach and program participants in many ways.
This volunteer position may be used as a service learning project/high school community service credit project, internship, or other college/high school credit project upon agreement of the school and Director.

Running Buddy
Supporting a young girl in her 5K Run/Walk
Administrative Assistance
Assisting the Executive Director and Program Coordinator with administrative duties such as database entry, preparing curriculum and marketing.
Fundraising/Promotion
Assisting the Executive Director and GOTRSEMI board with various aspects of fundraising including grant proposals, solicitation of private monies, fundraising events etc.
